This is your wedding night, a voice whispered through her mind. This is the night you’ve dreamt of...and now it’s come, and it’s all wrong.

Sitting on the bed in Jacob’s arms, Allison swayed weakly. Again, the voice echoed maddeningly through her head. His hands moved over her body, and she felt powerless to stop him...didn’t want to stop him, for everything he was doing felt wonderful. But the voice taunted her still.

Perhaps she had been foolish to allow herself to be used by Jacob and his father. They obviously were more concerned with saving face—and paving the way for Jacob’s royal wife—than with her happiness. She wasn’t sure how these things worked. Maybe no countess, duchess or princess worth her salt these days would agree to marry a prince who had fathered an illegitimate child.

But if clearing his way to the future was his only interest, why was Jacob holding her now? Why was he kissing her so tenderly, running his fingers up and down the sensitive curve of her spine, murmuring sweet words in her ear, which made her heart soar? That wasn’t a necessary part of the charade. No one would know whether or not the prince and his wife were intimate.

Undoubtedly, she thought sadly, he’s just taking advantage of the situation. Sleeping with women has become nothing more than a pleasant diversion for him.

Allison pulled away violently, lurched to her feet and staggered a few steps away from the bed, into the middle of the room. Glaring at Jacob, she tried to catch her breath by pulling in lungfuls of air.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, looking dazed.

“Everything!” she gasped. “You...me...us! And this place that makes me feel as if I can’t move for fear of shattering something priceless.”

Jacob followed her glance around the room. “There’s nothing here that can’t easily be replaced by a copy from some designer’s warehouse.”

He just didn’t understand. She spun to face him, her hands on her hips, ready to demand that they return to Nanticoke immediately. But she found him smiling at her, his dark eyes uncharacteristically bright, teasing.

“What?” she shouted.

“You’re still intimidated by all of this, aren’t you?”

“Yes, I am. So what?”

He seemed to think for a moment, although his lips remained turned up in a smile.

“I have my work cut out for me,” he murmured at last, standing up. He took a step toward her.

Allison backed away from him, responding to a warning flutter down low in her stomach. She was worried by the mysterious humor in his eyes. It was as if he’d delivered the punch line of a joke, only she just didn’t get it.

She narrowed her eyes at him suspiciously. “What are you talking about—your work cut out for you?”

“Come here,” he said, crooking a finger at her, moving toward her again as she backed away.

“I’m not sleeping with you.”

“We’ll see about that. In the meantime, I don’t intend to force you to do anything you don’t want to do. I just want to talk to you.”

“About what?”
